The Truth about Glass Transparency
Track: Truth + Transparency

To modern designers, “transparency” in architecture has usually meant “more glass.” Large expanses of glass were intended to bring the outside in, to allow a connection to the natural environment, to promote daylighting. Yet the glass box model of architecture is now under attack: expensive to build, poor thermal and visual comfort for occupants, large carbon footprint, deadly for birds, and actually not all that transparent. This session will take a fresh look at glass, transparency, human health and the health of the environment, and look at alternative paths forward.

Truth and Transparency Comes from Within
Track: Truth + Transparency

The Living Building Challenge community is a tough arena to play in. All involved are pushed, pulled, and stretched to be creative, innovative, fresh and practical. And then there is – life. Are we required to balance or integrate our family, career, faith, health, and sanity with our work? This session speaks to the need for community to not only celebrate our successes… but also share our deep struggles, especially for those considered taboo in our society. We believe the truth and transparency of the health and wellness of our community is vital to the success of our industry.

Petals to Pedagogy: Integrating Living Building and Community Concepts into Architectural Education
Track: Truth + Transparency

The University of Arizona School of Architecture is the first accredited program in the nation to implement a sustainability protocol across an entire five-year studio curriculum – and makes use of the imperatives set out by the Living Building Challenge to craft the content of this initiative.  The Living Community Challenge has been used within studio courses at Judson University to tackle complex problems of master planning.  Our interactive panel of university educators will investigate the status of sustainability within academia and where the vision for a future of regenerative designers situates within current architectural education, practice, and our communities.

Data Transparency: How Custom BIM Visualization Tools are Leveraging Truth in Energy, Water, and Materials
Track: Truth + Transparency

The accelerating trends in Transparency are transforming our awareness in all facets of how we consume- from health implications of chemicals used in building products, to the environmental impacts of energy sources, to the community impacts of the way we grow our food. With this exponential growth in the Truth behind our resources comes a need for holistic-yet-curated accounting to help us navigate the data glut. This session will explore powerful custom tools and dynamic BIM interfaces developed by leading planning and design firms. These tools provide transparency and context to the otherwise complex web of design impacts and tradeoffs.
