Cutting Edge Technologies: Balancing Energy & Comfort
Track: Water, Health + Vitality

In both design and operation, and traditional and green buildings, comfort and efficiency are often seen in opposition to each other. However, with new technologies that harness innovative materials, sensor networks, and more, it is now possible to achieve new heights of comfort and efficiency together. How do we analyze the synergies or incompatibilities of these technologies within a system? How do we maximize the use new technologies to their fullest potential? Through a participatory charrette, participants will learn to create value derived from “smart building” technologies to balance both energy efficiency and human comfort in their own projects.

Visualizing a Net Positive Water Medical Campus
Track: Water, Health + Vitality

Net zero water is always challenging, but it is particularly hard to visualize on technically complex facilities with atypical water flows, and even more so in climates with very limited rainfall. This session explores the potential approaches to a net zero water medical campus, including regulatory hurdles that would need to be overcome. The presenters will outline a range of strategies that could be used to achieve net zero water at both the building and campus scales, tackling hurdles such as climate, healthcare code requirements, current technology limitations, and cultural attitudes toward water reuse. They will share a visual approach to communicating water flows that look to other industries such as medical and aerospace as well as innovations inspired by nature.

Net Zero Energy Healthcare Facilities
Track: Water, Health + Vitality

During Living Future 2015, attendees were challenged with who would be the first LBC Certified project in the Healthcare field. Michael Weller, a Senior Energy Analyst with Glumac, will discuss strategies for achieving Net Zero Energy design for healthcare facilities through several case studies, including two medical office buildings that targeted net-zero energy during design. The panel will address design challenges and lessons learned, and present a case for the importance of sustainable healthcare facilities and what the future holds.

Finding Circadian Rhythms in Base Zero Lighting Design
Track: Water, Health + Vitality

Light is essential to human experience. It enables our perception of form, color, and texture. Light is critical to health and well-being through its influence on circadian rhythms that impact our energy, mood, and productivity. This session will highlight findings from a multi-year study on circadian functioning in office buildings, and describe the concept of “base zero” lighting design. State-of-the-art analysis pathways will illustrate how to approach the design of a healthy and resource efficient “lighting ecosystem.” This interactive session will enlist participants in actively applying lighting design techniques that start from zero and maximize daylighting efficacy, supplemented by energy efficient electric light as needed for visual tasks, circadian functioning and architectural expression; resulting in healthy, comfortable, and impactful spaces.

Living with Water in Boston

Track: Water, Health + Vitality

The Living with Water competition, set forth by the City of Boston, acknowledged that for the first time in human history, external environmental conditions will change significantly over the course of a building’s lifespan. The goal in designing for these conditions was to encompass five broad design principles: design for resilience, create double-duty solutions, strengthen community resilience, incentivize and institutionalize preparedness, and phase plans over time. This session will examine how this can be done at numerous scales, including the building, district, and infrastructure level.
